„I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth“ (Is. 62:6-7).
In 1998 we responded to this invitation/challenge of our God and founded the 24-hour prayer for Israel. With a few exceptions, this takes place in German-speaking Switzerland. Each person usually prays for certain half hour each week. This became a permanent prayer chain, which unfortunately has often had gaps which we and especially Israel’s God would like to see closed. Since most people pray alone at home, the desire arose some years ago to meet for a day of prayer – when we see and hear each other, pray together, eat together and encourage and bless one another.
In the past 20 years several prayer initiatives, groups and houses of prayer for Israel were founded. In addition there is the national IWS (Israel ministries in Switzerland) day of prayer which is held each year in Berne. Naturally we are happy to see this! But the word of the Lord quoted above explicitly states that we should not be silent the whole day (12 hours) and the whole night (12 hours. In other words, we should give HIM no rest permanently (24 hours), perseveringly and unceasingly! For this reason I consider the watchmen’s prayer such an urgent necessity, particularly in view of the currently increasing anti-Semitism. This year we met for the first time in the room of a social institution. Everything was wonderfully prepared, the rooms were well suited to the occasion and the food super!
Before praying for several topics we all proclaimed Psalms 24 and 97 and Col. 1:16-17. This made us aware of who is sitting on the throne and reigning victoriously. In spite of all the difficulties and opposition we must know to whom we pray and from what position. During the morning we also had a time of worship and communion. We must allow nothing to come between Jesus and us, nor among us; we must meet in a sanctified and cleansed attitude of our hearts. That is where the Lord commanded his blessing! (Ps. 24:5).
We prayed through topics such as anti-Semitism, Islam/Moslems, developments in Israel and in Switzerland. First we thanked the Lord, for example, for the film on anti-Semitism which was placed on the Internet for 24 hours and thereafter HAD TO BE shown on TV! It ignited much controversy…It was discussed in informal gatherings… And it COULD present German-speaking countries with another chance to repent…We also gave thanks for all the openings among Moslems in which they recognize who Jesus Christ is. Only then did we pray for the various areas.
Of course we also gave thanks for the Jewish people and prayed that the veil would be removed so they can recognize their Messiah. We based this on Ezek. 36:26-27.
In conclusion we also gave thanks for all the positive developments in Switzerland, initiated by the Israel ministries in Switzerland, Prayer for Switzerland and the Swiss/Israel parliamentarians’ group.
We prayed for Spirit-led further developments – unity among leaders – where necessary, a timely passing on of leadership in various areas and a mobilization of young prayer partners.
